Dark Shadow and the Red Streak

The Dark Shadow

You’ve met Jake before:  First, as one of Ricky the Beagle’s “Best Friends” (back in 2011), and more recently, as the killer of already-dead bunnies (“Rabbit Stew?“).  Jake, along with Nancy and Steve, came to stay with us last week.  He got three days worth of intense, one-on-one time with Kemba.  And if Jake could talk, he would undoubtedly tell you that was three days too many.

Jake is a gorgeous, sweet-natured Flat-Coated Retriever mix, with the softest black fur imaginable.  He’s not a young Turk, though.  Jake is 13-and-a-half years old, and likes his rest.  When he moves, he lumbers.

Kemba is, well, you know.  He’s exercise-obsessed.  He runs like a dart.  If he had his druthers, he’d never rest.  Every human has been placed on earth to throw to him.  Every dog has been placed on earth to wrestle with him.

There was a time a few years back, when Kemba was a tiny puppy and Jake had not yet become a senior citizen, that the two of them had playdates at Burying Hill Beach.  That time, however, is long gone.

How can I describe the picture of poor Jakey trying to sidestep hyperactive Kemba’s manic overtures?  A summertime sunbather swatting at annoying

horse-flies?  A quiet Westport pedestrian crossing the street to avoid a talky, irritating neighbor?  First Jake tried hiding behind the big green couch in the

den.  When Kemba tracked him down there, Jake slithered under the couch.  When even that wasn’t safe from Kemba, Jake, who’s not a big fan of steps at his age, actually went upstairs, desperately looking for new rooms in which to find some respite from this bowing, pawing menace.

Poor old guy.  My guess is the next time Nancy and Steve come to town, Jake will be lobbying hard for alternate accommodations.
