Beagle Man Wimps Out — Again!
Lye Brook Falls. Lye Brook Falls. All winter, whenever
we’ve done hikes in the woods, I keep hearing about the time back in the fall of 2013 — I wasn’t even born yet! —that Beagle Man and Langdon and Mike made it up to Lye Brook Falls. No disrespect, but if those oldies could get there, I could do it with two legs tied behind my tail. So why is it every time Beagle Man sets out for Lye Brook Falls with me, he always turns back??!! He did it again last Friday! We started out fine . . . until we hit the stream maybe 1/4 mile in. I have to admit, with all the run-off, that stream has become kinda wide. Beagle Man studies the situation, and concludes the only way
across is to take his shoes and socks off and walk through the water. He starts slowly and deliberately, then starts screaming “Holy this!” and “Holy that!” and “This water is %$*@&#-ing freezing!” — and finally he just flings his hiking boots across to the bank on the other side and makes a mad dash. Comes out, still cursing, feet all bloody. It was a pretty funny sight, but I kept my mouth shut. About a mile later, we come to an even wider stream — and this time he throws in the towel. For the second time this season. Oh, and on the way back down, he loses the trail, and I have to bail him out. Again. Shades of Brett Woods. He says he has an idea for next time, and that we’ll definitely make it to the falls. I’ll believe it when I see it.
Beagle Man and Ricky always have a lot to say, so I’ll just pipe up in The Duck Dog Speaks whenever I can
