WHAT KIND OF DOG IS THAT?

Yes, I was asked that once again about Kemba just this morning, at the dog park.  (Followed by “He’s gorgeous,” which, I’m pleased/proud to say, happens more often than not.)  A lot of people just assume he’s a Golden — and yes, I can see the similarities — but those with a sharper eye who notice the white chest and the reddish coat will ask me the breed question, and I’ll answer, “He’s a Duck Toller.”  If the quizzical look lingers, I’ll add, “a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.”  And if they haven’t moved on after hearing that five-word-long breed name, I’ll go full-Toller on them: Bred as a gun dog for hunting ducks; extremely intelligent; ridiculously hyperactive.

Likewise, if I pass a dog whose breed I’m not sure I recognize, I’ll ask the same question myself.  I’ve become familiar with quite a few breeds over my dog-owning days, but I’ll still get stumped from time to time, and I’m always fascinated to learn about a type of dog I haven’t encountered before.
