The Two Kemba’s
Obviously, I knew I’d be socked in watching Ravens vs. Pats and Panthers vs.
Seahawks on Saturday. And, of course, UConn hoops — vs. Cincinnati. Robby was still home from college (drove him back to the airport last night), and when Robby’s home there’s no such thing as a football or basketball game too insignificant for him to watch. And, as many of you know, the Beagle Man is expected to watch every minute with him. What I didn’t realize is that I’d also be required to watch the Knicks. Nobody should be expected to watch this sorry excuse for a team (5-35) this season, but the Knicks’ opponent happened to be the Charlotte Hornets, starring none other than Kemba Walker — our own Kemba’s namesake!
When Robby chose the name Kemba long before we even had the dog (yes, correct, this dog is mine, but Robby unilaterally claimed naming rights), the whole family eagerly embraced it. Because in 2011, prior to his becoming an NBA star, Kemba Walker led our UConn Huskies on one of the most amazing post-season runs in college basketball history — all the way to the national championship — and in the process became a huge Herman family hero. I assumed everyone, certainly everyone in Connecticut, would realize who our Kemba was named for.
I was one hundred percent wrong. Pretty much nobody has any idea who our dog is named for. Not even Connecticut jock-type males who are pretty big sports fans. Most people have this vague notion that he’s named for someone in “The Lion King” (Simba?), or maybe some other Disney character. So now, on top of having to explain that he’s a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (a what?), I also have to explain his name (Kemba who?). Bummer.
Anyway . . . here’s a picture (left, above) of Kemba watching Kemba.
Oh, and just so you know: On Wednesday I leave for Zermatt to ski the Alps with sons Matt and Greg and three of their friends. That’s 5 thirty-somethings and the Beagle Man, who’s . . . older than that. I promise to do my best to keep up with them not only on the slopes, but also in the bars. So if this is the last Beagle Man post you ever see, you’ll know why. 🙂
LOOK FOR A NEW BEAGLE MAN POST EVERY THURSDAY. OR PRETTY CLOSE TO THURSDAY. COULD BE WEDNESDAY. OR FRIDAY. LET’S NOT GET TOO OBSESSIVE HERE . . . OH, AND BTW, YOU CAN ALSO FOLLOW ME ON FACEBOOK AND TWITTER
