Dogs Crash THS ’67 Reunion!
. . . And no, Kemba wasn’t one of them.
But he certainly got his share of notoriety in absentia! Sandy Stark, the first of my classmates to spot me as I cruised through the doors of the Teaneck (NJ) Marriott at Glenpointe, said, “Well if it isn’t the Beagle Man!” She added that Kemba was the second-best-looking dog in the world, after her Crosby. (That’s a debate for another time . . .) Burt Boltuch, a loyal follower of my
annual Connecticut-to-Cali-road-trip-with-dog on Beagle Man, told me Kemba and I have to stop by next time we buzz through Oakland. And Cary Feldman said he never had any idea where Kemba and I were at any given time, since we always seem to be on the road.
Of the dogs who were in attendance at the reunion (weekend of June 2-4), Lola, a cute-as-a-button 10-year-old Pomeranian, spent the evening in Lili Rubin’s purse — as she did at our 45th reunion five years ago. She hadn’t aged a bit. (That goes for both Lola and Lili.) Lili tells me the day before the actual reunion party, during a nostalgic tour of Teaneck High, someone asked her what kind of dog Lola was, and she told them the itty bitty little thing was a German Shepherd.
“Hmm,” the stranger said, “a little one, I guess.”
Lola, at least, made it through her whole weekend at the Glenpointe. The same
could not be said for Beth Shapiro Green’s feisty little Kody, who barked so loud that
he — along with Beth — got tossed out of the hotel. As Beth harrumphed on Facebook, “We’ve been evicted from better places!”
My THS class of ’67 was always a close-knit one: After all, we were the ones who succeeded in getting radio celeb deejay Cousin Brucie to visit “The Castle on the Hill” by signing over a zillion post cards and getting Miss Hill named Principal of the Year for the WABC listening area! Lately, via FB, we’ve gotten even tighter, so there weren’t any huge surprises among the familiar faces at our Big Fiftieth. No fireworks — just a warm, welcome pleasure.
Kemba, don’t worry. I’ll bring you to our 100th.
LOOK FOR A NEW BEAGLE MAN POST EVERY THURSDAY. OR PRETTY CLOSE TO THURSDAY. COULD BE WEDNESDAY. OR FRIDAY. LET’S NOT GET TOO OBSESSIVE HERE . . . 🙂 OH, AND BTW, YOU CAN ALSO FOLLOW ME ON FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM.
