Old Dog, New Trick

It’s the Sunday morning of Thanksgiving weekend.  Kemba has just gotten me up, as usual, with his polite but insistent mewling — at 6AM.  As Sunrise over Burying Hill Beach, CT . . . those of you who know the Beagle Man are well aware, this is not my time of day.  Not by a long shot.  It is, however, Kemba’s. By 6:20 we’re heading over to Burying Hill Beach.  It’s still dark, but this has come to be our routine.  Before getting in the car I’d texted my...

A Nice Medium-Sized Dog, Huh?

Remember back when Beagle Man wanted a German Shepherd, and Mrs. B See . . . . . . any resemblance? wanted nothing bigger than a Beagle?  And this Duck Toller was the Great Compromise — a nice, medium-sized dog?  Hah!  Have you by any chance taken a look at Kemba lately?  Did you happen to notice the length of his limbs?  Steve the Breeder told B-Man that Kemba was starting to look a little “leggy,” that he had “big bones,” and that he’d probably be...

One Of the Stupidest Things I’ve Ever Done (And That’s Saying Something)

A nice black lab puppy sniffs Kemba. Cute . . . This might be better than the $27.99 elk antler. Heather the Trainer had told me about “Puppy Social,” a drop-in, pay-as-you-go ($10 for the 45-minute session) supervised play group at Paws ‘N Effect in Hamden.  I pride myself on knowing CT geography from my days of following the boys all over the state for their athletics, and I’m thinking, Hamden . . . not far, not far at all.  Exit 36 off I-95.  No big deal. ...

Kemba’s First Trip To Vermont

Ski country French Hollow Wow — four weeks Kemba had been living in Westport as of last Saturday, and I hadn’t yet taken him on a single major road trip!  (Not counting his original epic drive from Nova Scotia down to CT, that is.)  Had to do something about that, so last weekend Beagle Man and the Missus loaded Kemba into the Q5 and headed north — to Vermont.  Toller Pup behaved absolutely perfectly for the entire drive, both ways . . . so bring on LA/XC-4 this spring!!!...

Still Licking

My L.A. friend Ilene — we grew up together in Teaneck, NJ — calls me “Wanderlust Dude.”  She’s amazed that every year, within 48 hours after Kemba the Perfect: Fetcning for his master at Burying Hill Beach . . . returning from my cross-country road trip, I’ve driven to Montauk, or Vermont, or someplace else that takes a car to get to — after having spent the previous four weeks in a car!  By now, I’m guessing that Ilene — and most of you — have gotten...

Sa-Jack, Meet Ric-Kemba

Ric-Kemba indulging his shoe fetish I’ve been thinking about Sa-Jack, my roommate back in my fraternity days, because later this week is my birthday — and two days later, his.   Sa-Jack, these days, looks like Jon Stewart, and like Jon Stewart, he’s a pretty funny guy.  Always was.  One of his best routines, back in the day, was his riff on how he got his name:  His shrill mom was always ragging at him and his older brother, but in her apoplectic sputtering, she could...

Kemba Gets $48M Deal!

It’s Sunday night, and there’s Beagle Man watching his Knicks, once again, on TV.  They’re playing the Kemba Walker, on screen last night, at the free throw line Charlotte Hornets, whose star is — you guessed it — UConn’s own Kemba Walker!  And watching from the green couch, riveted by his every move?  Yup!  His namesake:  Kemba Herman!  I know, cute, right?  (The B-Man mentioned just how cute this was about a thousand times.)  But here’s the thing...

The Amazing, Miraculous “New Puppy” Weight-Loss Diet!

Kemba poses in a Portland, ME parking lot . . . This is incredible!  I’ve lost 4.6 pounds — I swear! — since bringing Kemba home with me last Saturday!  That’s even more impressive than the results of my inaugural LA/XC Diet™ back in 2011, when I dropped 5 pounds (because I often skipped meals to make my 500 miles a day), but that was over a four-week stretch.  I’m not exactly sure of the mechanics of this new diet, though no doubt keeping up with an 11-week-old...
