The Perfect Day
Jumped out of the shower just in time to see The Man in Orange make yet one more preposterous, self-
congratulatory speech — Straight Outta Fantasyland — before jetting out of Dodge. A good start to the day! (Later, listening on radio, I’d hear the Rev. Al Sharpton say, “Pettiness is now on a flight to Florida” — or words to that effect. Well put, Rev!)
Then I drove into town for (yet another) Covid test, prepping for a visit later this week to Grandson #3, who’s now 10 months old. The techs were right on time, they went easy on my nostrils, and I passed with flying colors. Here I come, Cole!
Left Manchester in a hurry, trying to see the actual inauguration on TV. Driving back up the long hill out of town, I caught the
swearing in of President Biden (on radio; it was early!) . . . and at that very moment, the clouds cleared, and brilliant sunshine and blue skies appeared over the Green Mountains! Wow.
I did make it back to the house in time to hear the greater part of
Joe’s speech, which was heartwarming, overwhelming, and pitch-perfect. What a welcome contrast to the oratory we’ve been forced to become used to. And how ’bout that stunning poem — both the words and the presentation — by National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman???!!!
With spirits already sky high, I capped off the afternoon with a celebratory hike around Hapgood Pond with Kemba. And now, am standing by for tonight’s “Celebrating America” concert, featuring The Boss, Jon Bon Jovi, the Foo Fighters, and friends.
Not a bad day, not a bad day at all. I don’t know if we can say for sure that happy days are here again — but man, today has been a pretty damn good start.

I totally agree. Great day. And I celebrated hiking with my bf—but only around the block. No pond or lake in sight.
Amen to that!!!
Four years ago this morning I picked up my prize for winning the “How many Miles?” contest. Hope there is another LA-X/C one of these years.
My sentiments exactly, but wish I had been able to join you on the hike. Amanda Gorman is my new hero. I can breathe again!
