Hank Herman is an award-winning author and writing instructor living in Westport, CT. He has three sons, and considers Kemba the Duck Toller his fourth. The blog is called “Beagle Man” in honor of Hank’s first dog, Ricky the Beagle. (He didn’t change the name both out of respect for Ricky, and because “Duck Toller Man” just wouldn’t have the same ring.) You can follow Beagle Man on Facebook and Instagram. If you would like to contact Hank you can send an email.
Hank, this is terrific!
Did you also write the book on college acceptance for your son? And why don’t you join our THS 67 page on Facebook…we’re having some fun in cyberspace reconnecting.
Best,
Sandy
Hank and Carol,
It was a pleasure meeting the two of you at the USC Game. If you make it back to another game in LA, you guys are always welcome to our tailgating party. Bring Ricky next time! He looks adorable.

Hank,
I stumbled across your blog while investigating who owns the gorgeous beagle shown on the Orvis Tempur-Pedic Bed on the Orvis Website. I thoroughly enjoyed the blog. Ricky looks remarkably like my Spanky who passed away this year @ 15. Anyone who has owned a beagle can fully appreciate your comments about Ricky hearing the unwrapping of food packaging while in a deep sleep. Or the begging or the indifference to small kids if there is no food connection. I miss my little guy terribly and hope to one day get another one. There is just something about a Beagle that is truly endearing to the human spirit.
Hi Hank and Carol,
I met you out in LA when you visited your son at USC. Carol was sitting outside at a table with Ricky and Hank was watching the game inside at the bar. My name is Erica and I was with my friend Krista. I still have pictures of Ricky in my phone!
Well, my 18 year old beagle is dying. I am heartbroken. She is the sweetest girl in the whole world. I know I am going to want another beagle. I’m wondering if I can visit Ricky sometime the next time I’m in CT for work. I’m in medical sales and I am always in the Westport area. I understand that this is probably a strange request. I will miss my girl so much and it will bring great comfort to see Ricky and take him for a walk or something. I’m crying just thinking about her. I’ve grown so attached to her.
I hope all is well,
Erica
PS- My mom and I were just reading the blog and laughing. We love it and all the pix of Ricky! Great job.
OMG — of course I remember you, Erica, and your friend Krista! I hope you’re aware that I mentioned you and your beagle in my September 19, 2011 post (“Fight On!”) right after Carol and Ricky and I met you. My offer to post a photo of you and your beloved doggy still stands, if you’d forward one to me. And yes, you’re welcome to stop by and visit Ricky any time you’re in town!
Hank,
Thank you for posting about Missy!! It was so nice of you to include her. I would love to visit you for Rick’s bday! I will actually be in your neck of the woods next Tuesday. Would love to stop by if you’re around!! Wish I could bring missy but she’s not one for long car rides anymore 🙁
Erica
Ricky had a great b-day! I’m sure he would have downed that whole huge cookie/bone treat in one big gulp, but I’ve been feeding it to him in bits and pieces. Hope Missy’s having a good day!
