Bequia Poodles

Bequia
So dazzled was my friend Cathy from Easton by her 15 minutes of fame from being mentioned in my last post (“A Beagle Named Jeep”) that she immediately began angling for an encore appearance

“We fly off to Bequia,” she e-mailed me, “to dog sit for all of February and part of March. Another blog post, perhaps? Beagles and island dogs?”

When I replied, “Nice work, if you can get it,” or something to that effect — as I always do when she brings up her very rigorous winter gig of watching a couple of pooches in the Caribbean — she got a little testy. She sent me a photo of Razzmatazz and Saffron (below), her two charges, and told me they’re “a real handful — just in case you think it’s all sun and fun.” Then she told me some harrowing tale about the time Razz and Saffron allegedly went at each other like two crazed pit bulls in a dog fight for money, and she was the one who had to break them up. (They sure do look ferocious sunning on that roof, don’t they?)Razz and Saffron

But what really interested me in her tales about island dogs was this factoid: “In Bequia, any short dog is called a ‘Bequia poodle.’ Don’t know why, since all poodles aren’t short. I don’t know if Ricky is short enough to qualify. Will ask my friend Lisa, or better yet, my local friend Abby, who never has less than 15 dogs and puppies at her house at almost all times. Hey, maybe this is another idea for your dog blog.”

No, Cathy — no need to ask Lisa or Abby if Ricky is short enough to qualify as a Bequia poodle. I can vouch for him. He’s almost short enough to qualify as a chipmunk.

And yes, Cathy, you’ve successfully weasled your way into another blog post.
