Anticipation
I’d by lying if I said I wasn’t starting to really look forward to my cross-country drive to L.A. with my doggy. I know it all started as a promise to Robby to bring his pup out to USC for an early-fall visit . . . but let’s face it — how great is this gonna be for me!? Three thousand miles of open road — just me, my music, and my dog, who, by the way, never complains about my playlist, or my route, or where I choose to stop along the way.
The whole prospect got a lot more real now that we left Robby in L.A. last week, after moving him in to his dorm on Wednesday. Both my wife and Robby’s roommate’s mom spent the whole time we were on campus worrying about their two poor little babies, but I gotta tell you — those poor little babies were doing just fine! Who wouldn’t be fine out there — the place is freaking paradise!! It was pretty clear to me by the way Robby and John mumbled polite but perfunctory answers to all the questions (“Now you see where I’m leaving the wipes — right here under the sink?” “Do you think we have enough of these push pins on the corkboard?” “You sure you don’t want more extra sheets? You know, you’re gonna wanna be changing your bedding from time to time . . .”) that the only thing standing between them and a great time was that we were still there!
I have a lot of logistics to work out for the drive — which I refer to as LA/XC in my internal notes to myself (I had been calling it Route 66 — but I’m starting to wonder how much of that road I’ll actually be driving). Haven’t figured out how many miles a day I’ll be shooting for, or my exact route, or my planned stops, but I still have three weeks to work all that out. One thing for sure is that I’ll drop in on some long-lost friends along the way. Definitely planning to stop in Tulsa, hometown of my oldest son Matt’s girlfriend, Lindsey. Lindsey’s family has three dachshunds who Ricky is very excited to meet (see photo, above right).
More to come as the plan takes shape . . .
