The Odd Couple
So by now you know I really like Kemba; we’ve established that. He’s cool, and he’s got a lot of heart — like
some other dog who used to hang out with the Beagle Man. But he’s almost 11 months old, and he’s still a little, I don’t know . . . foolish? B-Man has this friend Joe. Joe doesn’t really like the beach, and he clearly doesn’t like dogs. The only reason he comes out to Montauk is to spend time with the rest of the Duck 8. (That’s what they call themselves; don’t ask.) I used to have the sense to keep a low profile around Joe, for the most part. (How ’bout we don’t bring up that one Saturday when I pulled down the table cloth — and all the food on it — at Joe’s Trinity football tailgate.) So how did our little red duck dog handle Joe’s visit to Montauk over the Fourth of July weekend? Well, for starters Kemba has to shake-shake-shake himself dry after fetching tennis balls in the ocean forever. (I have no idea what he sees in this activity.) There are like 12 people sitting in a semi-circle on sand chairs, and who does our little genius choose to drench? You guessed it — the one guy who hates the beach. Then he decides to dig himself a little den near the group, madly spraying tons of sand behind him. Yup, on Joe, of course. Finally he dries himself by rolling around on his back in the sand, then looks for someone to snooze near — and makes himself at home within 6 inches of Joe’s chair. A few minutes later he scrunches up even closer, so that he’s actually lying on Joe’s feet. And then he shifts again, so he can rest his head on Joe’s knees! All right, it’s true — Joe finally cracks a smile. So now the little pup thinks he’s winning Joe over. Personally, I think he’s wasting his time.
The Roof Rack Report (#roofrackreport on Twitter, for those who follow me already on @BeagleManHank) used to appear regularly on Mondays. Now it appears once in a blue moon, when Beagle Man deigns to give me some space . . .
