Beagle Man’s 100 Favorite Songs Of All Time (Part Three)
We didn’t get through the entire Top 100 that Saturday night. In fact, it wasn’t until lunchtime Monday — Memorial Day — that we finally reached the Top 10. By then, as the holiday weekend wound down, the crowd was a little less raucous and celebratory, and a little more judgmental. (Sort of how they were on Saturday
before all the Bud Light.) So yes, there was a certain amount of carping. While most of the crowd patiently listened to that famous falsetto demand, “I want my, I want my MTV,” four times in slow-mo during the super-long warm-up in “Money For Nothing,” Robby — still with his nose out of joint
over the Wiz Khalifa snub — asked, “When does this [bleeping] song start?” (I’ll admit a large part of the reason I had “MFN” so high on my list is the slow,
haunting, dramatic lead-in — one minute, thirty-six seconds of it! — that builds to a crashing crescendo of drums and guitars signaling the actual “start” of the song.)
Robby had another gripe, when he saw my breakdown of selection by decade (included below): “You have 16 songs from the sixties!!!???” He says this as if we’re talking about medieval times. And my friend Mike was appalled that country newcomer Eric Church snagged the #4 spot, in the company of all-time greats Springsteen and the Stones. “Top 100 songs
ever?” he scoffed, when I played “Drink In My Hand.” “That’s not even one of the top 100 songs of this week!”
But as my mama (or someone) used to say, “You can’t please all the people all the time.” And as I myself put it, in my “pre-read” — “If you don’t like it, make your own damn list!” (Better yet: Let me know which of my choices you hate, and which of my omissions were downright criminal: Add a comment)
And for the record (pun intended), Judge Ricky’s favorite song on this list is Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart”; he thinks she’s singing about something edible. Tell me your dog’s favorite tune. Best answer gets this season’s most sought-after CD: “Beagle Man’s 20 Favorite Songs Of All Time.” (Add a comment)
Breakdown of favorites by decade: ’60s — 16; ’70s — 27; ’80s — 25; ’90s — 4; ’00s — 16; ’10s — 12 (Really not sure what was happening during the ’90s. Probably too preoccupied coaching Little League . . .)

Ok, 1st impression: we have very different taste in music. 2nd impression: maybe not so different after all… 3rd: 2 Tina Turners and NO Elvis???? The KING???? 4th: I like all the Bruce, but did I miss Born to Run? More thoughts to come…
I stand corrected. #33=B to R
I LOVE this and I LOVE White Rabbit – so glad it made the cut….I personally think it would be fun to read an article by you about the Rolling Stones as well….I have a feeling that would be a good one too!!!
Margret: Glad to see someone has good taste!
Pam: Seems like with each “impression,” you’re coming around. Keep listening!
Hank, 3 Taylor Swift songs, 2 Adele songs and only 1 Beatles song? Are you telling me there isn’t one Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin,Pink Floyd, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Four Tops or Temptations song you like better than three Taylor Swift songs? Were the contributing editors of this list a group of junior high school girls? (Only kidding, I like Taylor Swift, I just don’t admit it)
Mike, I’d like you to meet my friend Dave, president of the Taylor Swift fan club. (I’m VP)
What about Sweet Caroline? My personal all time favorite. But I will say… If I were ever to make a list, then Sweet Home Alabama would be #1. Love your blogs… please keep them coming. They always put a smile on my face
Sorry — I made a rule: No songs that they sing at baseball games. 🙂
Love that anyone has the time and perseverance to put together a 100 best list. Even just to get the rest of us thinking. Glad you changed the title from “Top 100 Rock ‘n’ Roll Songs” as some clearly are not RNR. Hotel California? Bye, Bye American Pie? Knockin’ on Heavens Door? etc. Nice start!
Brodie thanks you for the press! And submits his favorite song: “These Boots (feet) Are Made for Walkin’” and adds that he think Nancy Sinatra was hot!
Impressive undertaking! I wouldn’t even know where to start with a list like that. Though I would have included a few songs from the ’40s and ’50s. And probably some Sondheim…
